OECD urges former Soviet States to accelerate environmental reforms

In Russia 47 million people are exposed to high concentrations of nitrous dioxide. Half the population in rural Tajikistan, and one-third in Moldova, lack access to clean water. Leaded petrol is sold legally in Tajikistan and Turkmenistan. Many of these problems can be traced back to a common Soviet legacy that includes polluting industries, inadequate infrastructure, and outdated environmental management approaches. (read more...)

16/05/2007 - OECD countries agreed to invite Chile, Estonia, Israel, Russia and Slovenia to open discussions for membership of the Organisation and offered enhanced engagement, with a view to possible membership, to Brazil, China, India, Indonesia and South Africa.

A new start for enterprise development in Russia

The first meeting of the Committee for Enterprise Development (CED) in the Russian Federation, co-chaired by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) and the Russian Ministry of Anti-Monopoly Policy and Entrepreneurship Support (MAP), was held in Moscow on 22 January. CED gathered key players in the area of entrepreneurship development, including Ministry of Economic Development and Trade, Ministry of Tax and Revenues, Ministry of Science, Federal Fund for Entrepreneurship Support, State Duma, Presidential Administration, Russian Agency for Small Business Promotion, representatives of North-West Russia Federal District, Chamber of Commerce as well as representatives of EBRD, WB, FIA, Eurasia Foundation, USAID, Canada, Austria and Estonia.

Russia is to become the first non-OECD country to participate in the OECD's Regulatory Reform Review Programme. This was the key conclusion of the recent Seminar on Regulatory Management and Reform launching the new 2-year project in the OECD-Russia co-operation. The Seminar introduced the OECD Regulatory Reform Programme to senior Russian officials, business representatives and academia. The review will contribute to the design and implementation of regulatory reform strategies of the Russian Federation.
